Randie Coulter submitted this review for a rare resin conversion set. Could this perhaps be for a fire bomber Randie? 😉
If you have ever wanted a 1/72 scale DC-4/C-54 but, didn’t want to pay big bucks for the questionable Mach 2 kit then I may just have the solution.
A few years back, there was a conversion kit from a company called ‘Mullet Models’. I received a few bits and pieces and the instructions from one of these sets. I made a few phone calls and found out I was out of luck. They were no more! I did, however, learn the name of the gentleman who was behind ‘Mullet Models’….. Dana Kopher. A little detective work found that he was still active in modeling and living in Colorado.
I sent him an email with my request. Dana informed me that the masters were worn out and since Mach 2 had introduced their kit, he would not be re-doing his molds.
Back to square one.
I started collecting articles on converting the Heller DC-6B into a DC-4/C-54. But, my biggest drawback was that each one I found had made their own cowlings using a lathe. I don’t have a lathe. I decided to try and use some DC-3/C-47 cowlings as a starting point. Again, the cards were stacked against me. I couldn’t find any cowlings.
About the time I was about to give up, I joined the ‘Airliner Modelling Digest Yahoo group’ and found that Dana was a member there and even had a few of his other upgrades listed in their ‘For Sale’ section. So, I began lobbying my want of the DC-4/C-54 stuff. Well, I wasn’t the only one with an interest in it and Dana conceded that if there was enough interest, he would consider re-doing the molds.
Well, if I am writing this, it can only mean one thing. That’s right, Dana has re-done the molds and has the various parts to convert the Heller kit to a DC-4/C-54!
The first thing you will need is a Heller DC-6B kit. Then you will need to contact Dana and order the parts to do the job. There is also an instruction sheet that shows where the cuts need to be made plus other alterations needed.
He offers these parts separately so if you are willing to scratch build some of the items, you need only buy what you need…..
- Window Strips $ 10.00 plus postage
- Horizontal Stabilizers 12.00 plus postage
- Propellers 10.00 plus postage
- Engines, Cowlings, Intakes, Exhausts, A/C Intake & Radome 32.00 plus postage
Or, you can order all 4 sets for $55.00 plus postage.
These resin castings and detail are very good and I can highly recommend this set to ANYONE wanting a DC-4/C-54 and isn’t afraid to cut up a kit.
