David Willis reminds us that no matter what happens in our political processes- God is still in charge. They don’t get there without God allowing them to do so.
“No one rules unless God has given him the power to rule, and no one rules now without that power from God.” (Romans 13:1b NCV)
In the days before the 2004 presidential election, two students from the University of North Carolina, one a supporter of John Kerry, the other a George Bush fan, decided to publicly debate which candidate Jesus would choose if He were voting. As the debate pressed on, the exchange became rather heated and finally reached the boiling point when one participant slapped his opponent in the face. Now, I’m not really sure how Jesus would have voted in that election, but I’m quite sure that this particular debate grieved His heart.
I’m just as sure that the divisiveness, and finger-pointing that surround this presidential election causes Him sadness, as well. Judging from the amount of vitriolic e-mail floating around concerning both candidates and their running mates, it would appear that the level of political and moral polarization that grips this country has only increased. So what are we, as Christians, to do?
We are to exercise our right to vote. We have seen the results of a motivated voter-base in previous elections, and the vast difference that a few votes can make. Next, we are not to panic. Remember the truth of God’s Word from Romans 13 concerning those in ruling positions.
Lastly, and most importantly, we are to pray! In a speech made to the National Council of Churches, President Franklin Roosevelt said, “I doubt if there is a problem—political or economic—that will not melt before the fire of a spiritual awakening.” Friends, short of Scripture, no truer word have ever been spoken. Pray for all of the candidates, pray for our country, pray for spiritual awakening.
In closing, let me encourage you to remember God’s promise from 2 Chronicles 7:14 — “if My people, who are called by My Name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” Meditate on this Scripture daily…internalize it, believe it, practice it.
